For those Teaching Land fans out there, I apologize for the hiatus but it's back! This month has been intense both personally and professionally. I've been working on a post about it but it keeps turning into a rant and no one has time for that. So it's a story for another time!
Here are the gems since my last post:
Gem #1 - The truth hurts
Student 1: *Looking at an ad* "Dang she's fat."
Student 2: "mhmm"
Student 1: "Man, I'm mean. I gotta try to be nice."
The whole class: "Yeah you do!" "Seriously." "Like yeah."
Student 1 then looks at me and we both start laughing
Gem #2 - it's all greek to me!
My cherubs and I started a unit on Greek Mythology. So far we have covered what the hero's journey entails and the creation myth. The next lesson was completing a webquest on Hera, Zeus, Hercules, and Echo. Things went pretty smoothly until they reached the story about Echo (Click here for a quick refresher). The cherubs didn't seem to understand why Hera was upset! To help them, I explained to them the story using terms they would be familiar with. Here is the gist of my explanation:
Gem # 3 - The History of the Graham Dollars
During the beginning of September, I used Class Dojo, a simple classroom reward system. If you're not familiar with it, click here. I wanted the kids to really "buy in" so I became Oprah and began giving points left and right.
One of my students, Graham (I'm using his first name because his parental unit gave me permission), felt bad for the students who didn't get as many points as he did, and created his own system called Graham Dollars.
He presented the class with a plethora of Graham Dollars and read to us the history of them. Enjoy!
In case you cannot see it, here it is!
Also, I'm working with him on his run on sentences :D
"The History of Graham Dollars
In 2014, a young kid worked for a small group at his old school this group made books this boy made his book minecraft villagers and became a success then the following day the book would receive a sequel but the next two days went crazy the teacher was going to force the boys to shut there group down in order to save there group they had to shut it down for a few days then when it was over this boy had a great idea someday this group would expand into a company and it happened then he said maybe we could do more stuff besides writing books and drawings then another idea hit in his mind maybe people could buy or stuff and so Graham Dollars were born but they were not named that before they were named Commic Dollars but the company could not last forever it was until 2015 thats when it ended before that happened Graham made a new book.
